Renesas Introduces The Automotive SoC R-Car V4M Series, Ideal for ADAS Applications

Sep 25, 2024      View: 76

Renesas Electronics, a global semiconductor solutions provider, announced the introduction of the R-Car V4M series, a system-on-chip (SoC) for entry-level advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), to expand its popular R-Car product family. The new R-Car V4M series and the extended R-Car V4H series feature powerful AI processing power and fast CPU performance, while providing a good balance of performance and power consumption. Its superior TOPS/Watt performance and optimized energy efficiency make it ideal for entry-level, cost-sensitive ADAS applications such as front-facing smart camera systems, circumnavigation systems, automatic parking and driver monitoring systems.

Like the powerful R-Car V4H series, the new R-Car V4M series is based on advanced 7nm manufacturing process technology that delivers up to 17 TOPS of deep learning performance, high-speed image processing and precise object recognition with on-board cameras, radar and LiDAR. With the introduction of the new R-Car V4M and R-Car V4H products, customers can now choose the most suitable SoC from Renesas's scalable ADAS portfolio, which offers leading-edge AI technology, performance and energy efficiency to meet the needs of diverse ADAS applications. In addition, the new product maintains pin compatibility within the same family and software compatibility with existing R-Car products, allowing Oems and tier 1 suppliers to reuse existing software and reduce engineering costs.

Aish Dubey, Vice President & General Manager, High Performance Computing SoC Business Division at Renesas said: "We are expanding our ADAS portfolio to meet the growing demand for primary and secondary ADAS solutions in the mass market. At the same time, we are also developing a new fifth-generation R-Car SoC to further strengthen our offerings in ADAS, cockpit, gateway and infotainment. We are committed to creating the broadest range of embedded processor solutions for vehicles, from entry-level to luxury, under a single RoX development platform."

The R-Car V4M and R-Car V4H series feature up to four Arm Cortex-A76 cores, delivering application processing performance from 32K to 81K DMIPS. It is equipped with three Arm Cortex-R52 lock-step cores for real-time operational performance up to 25K DMIPS. Thanks to highly integrated design and advanced manufacturing process technology, these products deliver 9 to 34TOPS with extremely low power consumption and performance of 9TOPS/ W. In a typical full-featured smart camera with an 8-megapixel sensor, the R-Car V4M consumes about 5 watts, which is 50 percent less than similar products on the market.

To date, Renesas has shipped more than 450 million automot-grade R-Car products, including devices that meet the ASIL D quality rating, the highest level in the automotive safety integrity rating, which represents the minimization of risk.

The R-Car Open Access (RoX) platform supports SDV development

Automotive engineers developing with the R-Car V4M series and R-Car V4H series can enjoy the latest features of Renesas' complete SDV development environment. The newly launched R-Car Open Access (RoX) SDV platform integrates all the essential hardware, operating systems (OS), software, and tools automotive developers need to rapidly develop next-generation vehicles with safety and continuous software updates. RoX allows Oems and Tier 1 suppliers the flexibility to design a wide range of scalable computing solutions for ADAS, IVI, gateways and cross-domain converged systems, as well as body control, domain and area control systems. The platform comes with a software Development Kit (SDK) that includes an AI Workbench that enables developers to validate and optimize their models and test applications in the cloud.
