What is Active Suspension?

Active suspension can take into account the smoothness and handling stability of the car, while in the traditional passive suspension design, smoothness and handling stability are often difficult to take into account, and generally have to take a compromise approach.

what is active suspension

When the load quality changes or road conditions change, the active suspension can adjust its own parameters to keep the body height off the ground at a reasonable value, thus improving the handling stability, smoothness and passability of the car.

Active suspension control technology: Active suspension mainly consists of two parts: actuator and control strategy. Since the actuator outputs the main power exactly as required by the control strategy, the key to active suspension design is to select a control strategy that provides good performance for the vehicle.

Classification of Active Suspensions

There are four main types of active suspensions in the market: air suspension, hydraulic suspension, electromagnetic suspension and electro-hydraulic suspension. The following are introduced separately.

1.Air-type?active suspension

Air adjustable suspension is the most widely used active suspension system, which is mainly composed of control computer, air pump, pressure storage tank, pneumatic front and rear dampers and air distributor, etc. By changing the pressure and volume of compressed air in each air spring to change the softness of the car damping system and body height.

2. Hydraulic active suspension

hydraulic active suspension

Hydraulic active suspension is the use of hydraulic changes to adjust the body suspension system. Its core component is a built-in electronic hydraulic integration module, which can adjust the amount of hydraulic oil in the four actuating cylinders according to the signals of vehicle driving speed, body vibration, wheel hop and tilt status, in order to realize the adjustment of the softness and stiffness of the shock absorber and the height of the body.

3. Electromagnetic active suspension

electromagnetic active suspension

Electromagnetic active suspension is an active suspension system that has developed rapidly in recent years, its biggest feature is the rapid response, adjusting the suspension stiffness can be up to 1000 times per second. Mainly by the trip computer, wheel displacement sensor, electromagnetic hydraulic rod and straight dampers.

4. Electro-hydraulic active suspension

Electro-hydraulic adjustable suspension, also known as continuous damping control system (CDC), which consists of a central control unit, CDC damper, body acceleration sensor, wheel acceleration sensor and CDC control valve. It works by controlling the opening of the valve in the damper to change the speed of the damper oil flow, thus realizing the control of the damper stiffness. It is modified from the traditional suspension system and has a relatively simple structure.

Features of Active Suspension

1. Ordinary active suspension systems are equipped with an intelligent dcc dynamic suspension system, which adjusts the hydraulic damping of the shock through a motor proportional valve it also uses springs to provide support and adjusts the damping of the shock cartridge by means of electronic control.

2. In each side of the car the wheels are independent according to the elastic suspension system installed on the body or axle, the left and right wheels do not affect each other, which can be very effective in reducing the tilt and vibration of the body, naturally have a relatively high comfort and handling.

3. Ordinary such suspension system will also be upgraded on the chassis side, for this suspension, many are using advanced materials for damping, although the sacrifice of production costs, but can get a better sense of driving and operation, hydraulic adjustment of the electric control device can be built into the shock tube can also be placed on the side of the shock tube.

4. The most important feature of the active suspension is the rapid response, so that the suspension system is always in the best damping state.

5. There is a wheel displacement sensor at each wheel and body connection, the sensor is associated with the vehicle control unit, and the control unit is connected to the electromagnetic rod and straight cylinder shock absorber, in fact, the electromagnetic suspension has a very technological nickname, that is, magnetorheological suspension.

6. The main role of the suspension is to transmit all the forces and moments acting between the wheels and the body, such as braking force and driving force, and to soften the impact loads transmitted to the body by uneven road surfaces and attenuate the resulting vibrations.
